The arena is the preferred gathering place for everyone, with hockey being an integral part of the First Nations culture. More specifically, for the First Nations youth, sport is recognized as a means of gaining self-esteem, setting goals, collaborating as a team and positively spending their free time. Now, nearly 1,000 people can attend a sporting event or performance thanks to a facility designed around an ice rink, with thoughtfully considered dimensions.
The architectural adaptation of the building to Cree culture was essential to respect and reflect the community's values. The integration of the building's volume responds to the surrounding context, reminiscent of snowdrifts swept by the wind. The use of wood for both interior and exterior finishes reinforces the commitment to a high-quality aesthetic, contributing to harmony with the natural environment.
A strong emphasis was placed on the performance of the facilities, which needed to be adapted to a northern environment. The materials were carefully selected to ensure durability capable of withstanding harsh climate conditions. The building's optimization was achieved through the design of the space beneath the stands and the integration of a double roof, reducing the volume of air that needs to be regulated.
