A facility where technology and innovation align perfectly

Located in Valleyfield, the Collections Centre is fully dedicated to the delivery and retrieval of books. Supported by AutoStore© technology, McGill becomes the first university in the world to use a two‑storey storage grid along with state‑of‑the‑art robots to efficiently manage its inventory. This achievement represents a major step forward, setting a new standard for libraries in Québec through an automated system that is redefining the future of storage.

A sustainable approach that transforms spaces

LEED v4 Gold–certified, McGill University’s Collections Centre reflects a vision where innovation and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. The building’s white roof membrane reduces heat‑island effects, while the insulated envelope optimizes overall energy efficiency. Inside, six low‑energy robots ensure automated management of the books, which are protected through targeted measures against water, flooding, and fire. High‑performance curtain‑wall glazing provides exceptional comfort in the workspaces while allowing generous natural light to flow in. Designed for longevity, the project incorporates low‑maintenance layouts and operations that support the use of electric vehicles.

Between robotics, climate control, and security: the challenges of a forward‑thinking project

As a pioneering project in the management of a world‑class library’s inventory, new real‑estate solutions integrating emerging technologies were developed solutions that will influence the architecture and design of tomorrow. Designing a structure capable of accommodating robotic systems while meeting circulation, ventilation, and clearance requirements created an opportunity to propose innovative approaches. Custom‑built control systems were then specified to ensure the climate stability essential for preserving rare and historical books.

This project demonstrates how the design of institutional spaces requires deep technical consideration in order to optimize a building’s energy performance, operational efficiency, and the quality of our work and living environments.
