Whatever the scale of the community in which the Maison des aînés is integrated, it plays a predominantly multigenerational role. This is especially true in Cree communities, where elders play an essential role.

The institutional gives way to a more organic, pavilion-style layout, built around a large, unifying teepee. These elders' homes combine the latest care standards and practices with Cree cultural values, creating a welcoming, warm and dignified living environment that's totally in keeping with the Cree way of life.

To fully meet this challenge, an integrated collaborative process was established from the outset of the project, involving all stakeholders (specialists, staff and communities). The program governing the new MSSS "seniors' home" approach was carefully adapted throughout the project, to bring it into line with the customs and needs of these remote communities, and to prioritize the well-being of all users at all times.
